I'm back! It has been MONTHS since I've logged into DeviantArt. When I came back, I had over 10,000 Watcher Notifications (or whatever you call them). After clearing those out and pruning my Watch list, I'm ready to participate, again.
I have come to the realization that the only art I'm any good at deals is writing. I'm really good at podcasting, but personally, I don't consider that to be art. At least, not the way I do it. So, that leaves me with writing. I still love the visual arts, I've simply decided that I don't have the time to dedicate myself to growing any talent I have in that area.
Yesterday, I started to read a bit written by one of the artists I watch and was surprised at how rushed the work felt. I found several grammar errors and several jumps in the story that were not explained and only made sense when I stopped to think about it for a minute or so. It made me wonder if the people who post their writings here are taking the time and care that I've seen in the visual art pieces I so admire on this site.
Writing is an art form. It is a craft. It is tempting to take the first draft of a work and share it with the world, but I think that's a horrible way to get your work out there. Take time to polish it. Take the time to let it sit and come back to it so you can rework any problem points you find, then. Don't put it out for public consumption until you feel it's completely ready. If you consistently put out half-assed works, then those who watch you will begin to associate you with half-assed work. I know you don't want that.
I am no expert. I speak from my personal experiences, which are by no means all-encompassing. It takes much more time to digest a written piece of work than it does a visual piece. Make the time worth it for those who take the time to read and digest your work.
I plan on posting up some of my writing, here, in the future. I'm currently writing a short story in my Threshold: Tragic Superheroes RPG world that I'm very excited about. It's a little difficult to create the discipline to write every day or every couple days, but I'm working on that.
If you have any thoughts, I'd love to read them. My goal is to be much more active in the writing community, here. If you have anything you want to share, let me know.
